A young man who had initially been accused of encouraging the murder of Gordon Brown and Tony Blair was jailed for five years last week.
Ishaq Kanmi from Blackburn posted messages on a website claiming to be the leader of Al Qaida in Britain. The court found there was no evidence that he had links to Al Qaida.
Kanmi was said to have called for “the elimination of Blair and Brown”. The judge found no evidence his comments had any impact.
He was arrested as he waited to board a flight in August 2008. Among his luggage were electronic storage devices with material deemed to be useful to terrorists.
Kanmi had denied two counts of soliciting to murder Brown and Blair at his trial last year. The jury was discharged for legal reasons.
At the resumed hearing Kanmi pleaded guilty to terror-related offences and the charges relating to soliciting the murders of Brown and Blair were not proceeded with.
