James Watt College strike back on

Lecturers at James Watt College in the West of Scotland have voted for more strikes against job cuts.

They have been striking since December to stop the college sacking 29 senior lecturers and replacing them with 15 positions on worse terms.

Bosses were clearly on the run as they issued a Scotland-wide appeal for scab labour.

So there was outrage when the lecturers’ EIS union cancelled the strike—and reballoted staff on an almost identical offer.

A report sent to the EIS executive said the suspension of action had “only served to give management some breathing space just when maximum pressure was being brought to bear”.

The EIS headquarters was flooded with emails objecting to the lecturers’ treatment.

Now lecturers have voted to strike in greater numbers than before. A thumping 80 percent said yes on an 80 percent turnout.

Action is set to resume on Saturday of this week—and now the union will be paying strike pay for two out of the three days a week.

Now we need the knockout blow against management.
