Over 200 workers and students at the University of Leeds were joined last Thursday by staff from Leeds College of Art and by striking bin workers in a rally to defend jobs and education.
In an excellent show of unity several unions – Unison, Unite and the UCU – cheered as they watched redundancy notices for staff in biological sciences being burned in a brazier.
This action, against around 100 planned job losses, coincided with the vice-chancellor’s announcement that the university was planning to cut its budget by more than 10 percent!
The three campus unions have pledged to fight to save every job. They are demanding no compulsory redundancies and meaningful consultation with the trade unions over restructuring and jobs.
