The Anglo-American adventure in Iraq is heading for a disaster for Washington as great as the defeat in Vietnam.

Americans will not tolerate endlessly the blood sacrifice of their own troops, especially now that George Bush himself is comparing Iraq with Vietnam. But any American “exit strategy” is unlikely to include the 14 fortress bases the Pentagon has built in Iraq as its “headquarters” in the Middle East.

Until these are vacated, a violent, imperial presence will endure.

The anti-war movement must seize the opportunity of apparent disarray in both the US and British establishments, while never underestimating the ruthlessness of the enemy.
