Journalists working on three of Britain’s biggest regional newspaper groups were called to an emergency NUJ union meeting last weekend.

The meeting came after the announcement of title closures and big job losses across the industry. Union members at a number of newspapers are preparing to resist the attacks.

Jeremy Dear, the NUJ’s general secretary, put forward a motion that was unanimously accepted. It argued for co-ordinated industrial action at affected titles against job cuts and pay freezes.

This would build for a national day of action and protests. The campaign will involve the public, stress the importance of the local media in local democracy, and highlight the question of newspaper ownership.

Another conference has been called for Saturday 24 January. All NUJ activists from the affected sectors need to make this date a priority.
