Babar Ahmad’s family and friends have vowed to fight all the way against home secretary Charles Clarke’s decision last week to extradite him to the US on bogus terrorism charges.
“We are going to the high court to appeal against this decision—and if that doesn’t work, we’ll go to the House of Lords,” said Ashfaq Ahmad, Babar’s father.
“We’ve done everything we could democratically. We have campaigned up and down the country, informing people of Babar’s plight. We gathered 15,000 signatures on a petition, lobbied MP and wrote letters.
“But all of this meant nothing to the government. I always respected the justice system in this country — but now I have my doubts. Now I’m thinking there are two laws — one for them and one for Muslims.
“Nevertheless we should not be afraid of them. We need to keep up all the pressure and demonstrations. Had this not been done, Babar would have been sent to the US long ago.”

Campaigners for the release of British Guantanamo detainee Omar Deghayes were due to visit the US embassy on Tuesday of this week.
“We’re taking a petition and a dossier of legal documents to the US embassy,” Jackie Chase from the Save Omar campaign told Socialist Worker.
“We’ve been trying for weeks to get an appointment with the US ambassador, but we were told he didn’t have an appointment available.
“We’ve been passed on to a second secretary, who is meeting us at the door — they say it’s not policy to let us in.
“In a democracy we should be able to sit down and talk to these people. I’m a music teacher, not a terrorist, and I’m bringing them pieces of paper, not a machete.
“We’re requesting that a family member and a doctor be allowed to meet Omar, and that the Geneva Conventions are adhered to in the treatment of all Guantanamo prisoners.”
