Keep up pressure for free education

THE CRISIS over higher education funding in Scotland was continuing this week, with Labour and the Liberal Democrats wrangling over the Cubie report. Lawyer Andrew Cubie produced a devastating report before Christmas that slammed Labour’s higher education policies, called for an end to upfront fees, and for the return of maintenance grants for poorer students. Now Scottish first minister Donald Dewar and his New Labour cronies are desperately trying to water down Cubie’s proposals whilst maintaining their coalition with the Liberal Democrats.

A committee of three Labour and three Liberal MSPs is trying to stitch up a compromise. A clear majority in the Scottish Parliament wants fees to go. The Liberal Democrats pledged they were for scrapping tuition fees during last year’s election for the Scottish Parliament. Students, parents and lecturers must keep up the pressure for free education.
