Civil service workers, postal workers and other public sector workers were set to march through Gordon Brown’s Kirkcaldy constituency on Wednesday – the day Brown became prime minister.

The march is being organised as a protest against New Labour’s neoliberal policies.

“There is great union support for the lunchtime demonstration,” says Steve West, the PCS union’s campaigns coordinator in Fife.

“Lots of unions are supporting the protest including the Fire Brigades Union and Kirkcaldy trades council.”

Willie Marshall, the assistant branch secretary of the CWU Scotland Number 2 branch, told Socialist Worker, “We are backing the march because we believe in defending public services.”
