Saturday’s protest at Upper Norwood library

Over 100 campaigners joined a protest against cuts outside Upper Norwood library in Lambeth, south London, last Saturday.

A campaign to defend Lambeth’s libraries from cuts by the Labour-run council has seen strikes, protests and a ten-day occupation.

The council is on the back foot. It offered money last week to keep one member of staff at Upper Norwood. But it is still set to lose four library staff from 1 July.

Upper Norwood library is in Gypsy Hill ward, where Labour faces a by-election in June. It hopes voters can be bought off with minor concessions.

Library campaigner Michaela Loebner argued, “Given the shambles of their plans and all the extra money being used it shows that we shouldn’t be palmed off with tiny individual solutions.”

Just one Labour councillor has spoken out against the library cuts. Rachel Heywood faces disciplinary proceedings. Campaigners planned to protest in solidarity outside her meeting with the Labour whip on Tuesday evening.

Strikes could sweep away Glasgow council’s cuts

Janitors employed by council-owned firm Cordia in Glasgow were set to strike for three days from Wednesday. Bosses are refusing to give them the same payments as other council workers.

Meanwhile, some 2,500 workers across key services could soon strike over an attack on terms and conditions.

Unison and GMB union members began a ballot for strikes last week.

South Ayrshire Council refuse workers were set to strike for 24 hours on Thursday over attacks on working conditions, working hours and overtime rates.

The Unite union members have faced threats of dismissal from bosses if they refuse to sign up to the new terms. Workers are also continuing a work to rule.
