Around 200 students and lecturers marched through Liverpool city centre last Saturday against planned cuts at universities in the city.

Both Liverpool university and John Moores university face major cuts.

Three departments are under threat at Liverpool and 1,000 student places have gone at John Moores.

James, a student at John Moores whose course is being cut, said, “The general mood is anger. I think we can see the beginning of a community-wide campaign.”

The marchers chanted “Whose university? Our university!” and “Students and workers unite and fight”.

Martin Ralph from the UCU union at Liverpool university said that workers would take action to protect jobs if management continued to push the cuts.
