Refuse workers in Leeds were to hold a mass meeting on Thursday of this week to discuss resistance to the council’s plans to cut their pay by up to £6,000 – around a third of their annual wage.

Workers from the GMB, Unison and Unite unions will discuss a joint process of balloting for industrial action against the massive pay cuts.

This could see strikes across the summer.

Leeds council is also threatening to privatise the refuse service.

The unions believe that the pay cuts are part of a plan to make the service tempting to private bidders.
