IN A disgraceful attempt at union busting, Glasgow’s Labour council has hired scab labour to break an official strike. Last weekend council officials hired the private firm Scotia Security. Along with senior managers, they were used to break the strike by 140 low paid Unison staff who work for the city’s leisure and recreation service. The strikers asked council workers in other unions to respect their picket lines on Saturday and Sunday.

But on Friday Bridget McConnell, director of the council’s leisure service and wife of first minister Jack McConnell, issued a ‘sign or resign’ ultimatum to all strikers.

Her letter says that anyone refusing to sign new contracts will be sacked. The dispute stems from the Labour council’s determination to restructure the city’s museums, community and leisure centres, and libraries. The present staffing structure will be abolished, and some staff have to reapply for their jobs.

The TGWU and GMB unions, which represent other staff involved, have agreed to the restructuring of the leisure and recreation service after the council made certain concessions. But Unison members who are to become ‘leisure attendants’ voted to strike because the changes being foisted on them would mean ‘a job description from hell’.

Unison spokesperson George Johnston said, ‘Our members are being redesignated as leisure attendants. The two-day strike on 8 and 9 June will be followed by further action unless they deal with our concerns.’
