Liberals are not better
TO THOSE who think the Liberal Democrats are a left alternative to New Labour, remember they are:
Tuition fees a mistake
MO MOWLAM, the Cabinet Office minister, admitted last week that tuition fees were a mistake. And she says that New Labour’s abolition of student grants was “one of the things that we should not have done”.
Another handout
RAILTRACK bosses are demanding another 6 billion from public funds. Yet in the very same week they brazenly handed 200 million to shareholders! All the main parties rule out the idea of renationalisation as “too expensive”. But the 6 billion demanded by Railtrack is twice as much as the company is valued on the stock exchange.
The Socialist Alliance and the Scottish Socialist Party want the railway immediately brought back under public control, with no compensation for the fat cats.
Back asylum seekers
THE COMMITTEE to Defend Asylum Seekers is to publish an open statement in the Guardian next Tuesday condemning politicians who are playing the race card. The statement has been signed by leading journalists and trade union officials, including John Edmonds, leader of the GMB, as well as all members of the national executives of the FBU and BECTU unions. Rush any more signatories to [email protected] and donations to Committee to Defend Asylum Seekers, BCM Box 4289, London WC1X 3XX.
