Lives are put at risk

THE GOVERNMENT currently spends 80 million a year on the NHS Direct scheme. Its effect is to deter people from getting treatment. Lord Winston, the fertility expert and Labour Party lord, warned this week that NHS Direct could put lives at risk.

He said that lack of face to face contact means “nurses may not be aware of certain signs of disease, which might lead to things being missed”. His criticism was endorsed by Cherie Blair’s sister Lauren Booth, who was badly advised by NHS Direct earlier this year and called it a “second class service”.
