HUNDREDS OF workers at Lloyds TSB are balloting for industrial action in its central Newcastle call centre in a bid to stop the company shifting its 960 jobs to India. The ballot is scheduled to run from Monday of next week for seven days. It is part of the Unifi union’s Stop the Closure campaign. It will also see a petition launched at six other sites.

Lloyds TSB said it expected compulsory redundancies at the Newcastle Central Square site that does routine bank account enquiries and alterations. Unifi negotiator Bernadette Fisher said, ‘People here are very angry about the way they have been treated, and want their voice heard.’ Lloyds TSB’s closure announcement follows a similar move by HSBC involving 4,000 jobs.

LLOYDS TSB workers collected hundreds of signatures outside the banking giant’s Hanover Street branch in Edinburgh last weekend in protest at the plan to move jobs abroad.
