More than 300 people demonstrated in Clapham, south London, on Saturday of last week against the planned closure of Clapham fire station.

The demonstration was organised by firefighters in Clapham alongside other local trade unionists, the Labour Party and community activists.

The firefighters’ FBU union had a large contingent on the march. There were banners from the UCU and NUT unions, the Labour Party, Lambeth Greens and Lambeth Save Our Services.

Local Labour MP Kate Hoey addressed the demonstration. She congratulated the crowd on the size of the demo.

FBU general secretary Matt Wrack said the march was just the start of the campaign.

Some firefighters felt there should be industrial action to save the station.

But the Labour Party is focused on negotiations and consultations. The FBU has called for station occupations.
