May Day marches round Britain

Thousands of people celebrated International Workers’ Day with marches taking place in towns and cities across the country.

Around 1,000 people protested in London on May Day.

Over 3,000 people took part in the Glasgow TUC protest last Saturday. There were speeches by representatives of the Scottish TUC youth committee, the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, and the Unite union.

Around 300 people marched in Edinburgh last Saturday, with 200 in Newcastle, where Stop the War Coalition convenor Lindsey German addressed the marchers. Hundreds also joined the protest in Liverpool.

Stewart Halforty reports, “Some 80 people marched through the centre of Plymouth on its May Day protest on Monday. The march was made up of students, young people and trade unionists. It culminated in a rally at the Guildhall.

“Reps from the PCS civil service workers’ union, Plymouth trades council, the NUS and one of the youngest branch secretaries of the CWU communication workers’ union.

“Trade unionists on the platform urged the young people to get involved in the union, saying the youth were the future.”
