McJobs on offer
McLABOUR means McJobs. A report by the TELCO community organisation, focused on east London, found that privatisation of public services “has driven down the pay and conditions of staff”.
New staff taken on by private sector firms brought into the public sector “have minimal rates of overtime pay, no London weighting, sick pay, bonuses, pension or compassionate leave”.
New refuse workers taken on by contractor ServiceTeam in Hackney, for example, get only 20 days holiday and only get sick pay after five years-and even then get nothing for the first three days sick. The same workers also get no pensions, bonus or any other benefits.
Report author Jane Wills says, “I have been struck by how far the Labour Party has come in such a short time. It is doing amazingly appalling things. “Executive pay is up 28 percent, yet we found appalling pay and conditions in the private sector in east London.”
