“Immigration soars 20 percent in a year” screamed the Daily Mail front page on Friday of last week. The claim was repeated across the British media.

But it isn’t true. There has been a 20 percent increase in net migration last year—mostly down to a decline in the number of Britons emigrating.

Long-term immigration remained stable at 575,000, compared to 567,000 the previous year.

Claims that immigration is a drain on Britain’s finances are equally dishonest.

Almost half of last year’s new arrivals came here to study, and paid exorbitant tuition fees.

Migrant workers also contribute more in taxation than they “cost” in benefits or public services.
