The Metropolitan Police force was humiliated this week when a judge rejected the evidence of one of its supergrasses, Gary Eaton.
Eaton was giving evidence in a second trial into the 1987 murder of private investigator Daniel Morgan.
The trial has now been dropped. It follows the collapse of a previous investigation into Morgan’s death earlier this year.
In both cases, the trial judge ruled that Eaton—described as a pathological liar with a history of psychiatric illness—was incapable of being believed.
Yet in 2008 Eaton was rewarded for promising to give evidence in these trials with 25 years being cut from his prison sentence.
He has since been released and lives under a witness protection programme.
No one has been brought to justice for the murder of Daniel Morgan. He was killed a week after he revealed that he was taking allegations of police corruption to the News of the World.
Morgan carried out investigations for Southern Investigations.
The agency ran dodgy information gathering activities for various newspapers—especially the News of the World.
The Metropolitan Police has investigated Morgan’s murder case five times.
When the last case collapsed earlier this year, the Met admitted, “It is quite apparent that police corruption was a debilitating factor in that investigation.”
Jonathan Rees—Morgan’s business partner at Southern Investigations at the time of his murder—was one of five suspects in his killing.
Rees was acquitted when the trial collapsed earlier this year.
Andy Coulson, while editor of the News of the World, rehired Rees in 2005.
Coulson resigned as editor in 2007 and went on to become chief spin doctor for Tory prime minister David Cameron.
The Morgan case is the dark centre of the corruption in the phone hacking scandal.
