Tory ministers refer to places in which “three generations of the same family have never worked”. But there’s little proof that such families exist.

People from poor backgrounds are more likely to end up in poverty. But most unemployed people have worked in the past and have relatives who work.

Recent research found that only 0.9 percent of households included unemployed people of two generations. Just 0.1 percent had people of two generations who’d never worked.

The Joseph Rowntree Foundation think tank tried to study 20 third generation unemployed families in Glasgow and Teesside. They failed to find a single one.
