More nuclear safety scares

BRITISH Nuclear Fuels (BNFL) was hit by crisis again last week, only two weeks after one of its chief executives was sacked because of the company’s appalling safety record. This time the threat to our safety was at the Springfields plant near Preston, which is identical to the nuclear plant in Japan which blew up last year. Safety inspectors last week seized four batches of uranium fuel at Springfields because it was unsafe to use.

The uranium was due to be put into reactors last week when the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate discovered cracks in the uranium’s casings. If the fuel had been used radioactive material would have leaked into the reactor’s cooling system, causing serious safety problems and potential disaster. Only last month BNFL was exposed for falsifying safety records at the Sellafield reprocessing plant in Cumbria. The government should shut the entire nuclear industry down now.
