As Israel continues its bloodshed in Gaza a national demonstration has been called in London for next Saturday.
Some 3,000 protesters cheered the announcement of the new march at a demonstration outside the Israeli embassy in London last night, Friday.
Speakers included Lindsey German, convener of the Stop the War Coalition. She told the rally, “We want you to go away back to your friends, back to your family, back to your workplaces.
“We need to get as many people to the demonstration as possible. We want to have hundreds of thousands of people there.”
The rally was loud and full of energy. Although it was scheduled to finish at 7.30pm, hundreds of demonstrators kept on marching into the night chanting “we want sanctions”.
Sadia, a student from north London, said, “I’m glad people are still coming, I was worried that the protests would run out of steam.
“We have to keep going until Israel stop.”
Hanan came to the protest straight after work. She said that she could not just go home whilst the massacre continued.
“When you don’t switch off to what’s going on and you actually research it, it’s hard not to feel angry,” she told Socialist Worker. “Going to these protests neutralises this frustration at the world because you see that people do care and they do want to change things.”
The Tories have backed Israel even as it bombs school and hospitals. Next Saturday’s demonstration is an opportunity for everyone who wants to show they stand in solidarity with the Palestinians to take to the streets.
Every activist needs to get the word out urgently. Trade unions, mosques, local Stop the War and Palestine Solidarity Campaign groups can all book coaches and other transport.
