Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, the man wrongly convicted of the 1988 Lockerbie bombing, has published new documents to prove his innocence.
Previously secret papers reveal that police officers took an active role in seeking a £2 million reward for a key witness in the Lockerbie trial and his brother.
Al-Megrahi was forced to drop his second appeal case, meaning new evidence will now not be heard in court.
The revelations further undermine the credibility of shopkeeper Tony Gauci, the prosecution’s main witness.
The papers reveal that Gauci received more than £1.2 million
—and his brother Paul, who never testified but “exercised considerable control over his brother”, received £800,000.
The documents also point to important eyewitness evidence that shows Megrahi did not buy clothes later found next to the suitcase carrying the bomb.
A witness called David Wright saw other men buying them in Tony Gauci’s shop in Malta.
In November 1989, Wright called police to say he had been in Gauci’s shop when two Libyans bought similar clothing. He said Gauci called them “Libyan pigs”.
But Wright’s statement was never followed up.
