Human Rights Watch published a report this week that says Britain has “pursued a series of counter-terrorism policies that undermine the absolute prohibition on torture”.
The complicity of British agents in torture, it says, “sends a clear message to the authorities…that Britain is indifferent about the torture of terrorism suspects in its custody”.
And the Tories are determined to keep it that way. The government is continuing to cover up torture where Labour left off.
It is refusing to release the guidelines used by British intelligence for interrogation and torture of prisoners including those held in Guantanamo Bay.
A high court judge ruled this week that the guidance may well be unlawful, but that information did not need to be released because the government would be rewriting the policy in the future.
The last Labour government made the same promise.
Numerous prisoners held during the “war on terror” were tortured. There is repeated and clear evidence of British complicity in their mistreatment.
