THE government quietly gave the go-ahead to the Sellafield mixed oxide (mox) nuclear plant in Cumbria just before Christmas. British Nuclear Fuels Limited opened the plant just hours after gaining an operating licence from the government.
The plant has an appalling safety record, and will remain highly radioactive for thousands of years. It was also revealed this week that safety fears have meant the nearby Calder Hall nuclear power station in Cumbria has had to be closed down.
None of this seems to worry New Labour, whose pro-nuclear stance was underlined when it gave British Nuclear Fuels executive Sue Ion an OBE in the New Year’s Honours list.
