The US war drive goes on regardless. Whatever the diplomatic niceties surrounding George Bush’s visit to Europe, it is business as usual in Washington.

In Iraq, US troops have surrounded the city of Ramadi pending a full scale assault.

In Brussels, Bush piled pressure on Syria by demanding it pull its troops out of Lebanon and break links with radical Palestinian groups. He was supported in this by the French president, Jacques Chirac, and by Britain’s foreign secretary Jack Straw.

The former UN weapons inspector Scott Ritter claims Bush has “signed off” plans to bomb Iran.

All of this makes the 19 March global day of protest against the occupation of Iraq crucial.
