The trial of former News of the World editors Rebekah Brooks and Andy Coulson and six others at the Old Bailey continues.
Prosecuter Andrew Edis QC told the jury that the case went back to the revelation that murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler’s voicemail messages had been hacked.
Edis told the jury that this was a “simple case” with “a lot of evidence”.
Glenn Mulcaire, Clive Goodman and Neville Thurlbeck hacked phones and senior people at the News of the World and the Sun allowed it and paid Mulcaire to carry it out, he said.
He added that the editors “didn’t stop it” and were party to a conspiracy to make sure it carried on.
Emails would also show, he argued, that Andy Coulson agreed to corrupt payments to police officers.
