The government’s proposals to smash the NHS and leave the scraps for private companies were pushed through by the House of Lords on Wednesday of last week.

Peers voted with a 134 majority against a move to block the reforms.

Now, as the Tory and Lib Dem cutters celebrate, their friends in the private healthcare sector will be ready to reap the financial rewards.

Health secretary Andrew Lansley has made little secret of his ties to private sector lobbyists.

The “independent, grassroots think tank” 2020Health, praised by Lansley as “providing valuable impact on future policy”, is led by representatives of big business.

These include the medical director of the Nuffield private hospital group, the CEO of Independent Healthcare Advisory Services and the director of bankers NM Rothschild.

The group is chaired by former Tory minister Tom Sackville. He is CEO of the International Federation of Health Plans—a coalition of over a hundred private companies.

These are some of the companies set to benefit from the NHS’s demise.

Despite the Liam Fox scandal, and David Cameron’s promises to curb corporate lobbying, the rich have got their way.

It’s up to NHS workers and patients to stop these market reforms in their tracks.
