Norfolk and Norwich Hospital

THE STRIKE by electricians at the Norfolk and Norwich PFI hospital site has ended. Last month 250 sparks walked off the job in a dispute with contractor Crown House over travel allowances.

The strikers were immediately sacked. Crown House is in the process of recruiting a new workforce. It hopes to lure back some of the original workers, although many are refusing to return. Electrician Alan Bone told Socialist Worker, “This has been a matter of principle and we are proud that we acted on principle.” The stoppage did not close the whole site but it has set back the electrical work. Disgracefully the electricians’ AEEU union refused backing for the strikers because their action was unofficial and taken without a postal ballot. If the union had built the pickets and won solidarity from the rest of the site then a victory could have been won.
