The NUJ journalists’ union called for an end to the harassment of its members by the police on Friday of last week. A set of guidelines on dealing with the media was agreed between the NUJ and the Association of Chief Police Officers last year.

However, examples continue to surface of cases involving officers obstructing photographers taking photos and the confiscation or deletion of pictures once they have been taken.

Jeremy Dear, the NUJ general secretary, demonstrated outside Scotland Yard on Friday.

He said, “It’s a shame that we have to hold a stunt like this to help the police spot the difference between a protester and a press photographer.”
