Delegates also condemned rising workloads, stress and bullying in schools. They passed a motion to ‘support action, up to and including industrial action’ in cases where teachers faced excessive lesson observations. Delegates noted that cuts would make the situation worse and backed strikes over workload too.
Teachers backed motions to improve the working conditions of supply teachers. They voted to ‘congratulate those school, college and university students who took part in protests against government policy’ as well as the teachers who backed them. Delegates condemned cases where teachers had been victimised for supporting students’ right to protest.
They called for Education Maintenance Allowance to remain, the abolition of tuition fees and the restoration of grants for all students. Delegates also condemned the police tactic of kettling protesters.
Delegates passed a motion calling for the ‘immediate repeal of all anti trade union legislation introduced by both Tory and Labour governments since 1979’.
They also backed a motion opposing government attempts to undermine national pay and conditions agreements and pointed to the threat posed to these agreements by academies and free schools.
Delegates also voted to instruct the executive ‘to approach the UCU to suggest talks to explore the possibilities of uniting to form one union covering the whole education sector’.
