The oil disaster that began on 20 April after the Deepwater Horizon rig owned by BP exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, killing 11 workers, continues to get worse.

The US oil drilling regulator ignored warnings from scientists about environmental risks, it has emerged.

Government officials received cash bonuses for meeting deadlines on leasing offshore oil and gas exploration.

They also altered their own documents to enable drilling.

And BP has admitted it is siphoning much less oil from the spill than it had said—1,000 barrels a day, not 5,000.
