Over 100 low paid porters, cleaners, catering staff and domestics at Southampton general hospital took to the picket lines on Wednesday and Thursday of this week.

The workers, who are in the Unison union and employed by Medirest, are angry about the firm’s refusal to pay outstanding backpay.

Strikers held a noisy and determined rally on Thursday and marched around the hospital to the Trust offices. They sang, “We shall not be moved” outside a room where Trust executives were gathered.

Management were left in no doubt that the strikers were united and determined to win their claim. Around 200 staff struck for 48 hours and are prepared for further action if talks in early January are not satisfactory.

The strike in Southampton is linked to another this week against Medirest in Wycombe and Amersham.
