Campaigners in Waltham Forest in east London are fighting to defend school meals. The council has decided to get rid of Waltham Forest Catering as a way of cutting costs.
From March next year schools will be responsible for providing school meals. Heads have to decide in July 2007 whether to contract out or take it on themselves.
There are fears that heads could get rid of hot school meals altogether. The decision to scrap the catering provison will also affect the elderly – through the meals on wheels service – and the very young in nurseries.
Dinner ladies, parents and teachers met on Tuesday of last week at the town hall to organise the campaign.
The meeting was so packed that campaigners had to move to a bigger room. As people waited they blocked the town hall entrance and gave councillors who were arriving for a meeting a roasting.
A demonstration has been organised for Thursday of this week to lobby the council meeting.
