The English Defence League (EDL) has shown its true colours once again.
Its rampaging thugs last week descended on a pensioner in Lewisham, south east London, who had dared to stand up against its racism (see below).
Following its cowardly attack, the EDL has declared it plans to run riot in Luton this weekend. EDL supporters hope to spread fear among the town’s Asian population.
It’s vital that we stand united against them.
Far right groups across Europe are trying to use the economic crisis to scapegoat migrants and Muslims for problems that working class people face.
Over 6.4 million people voted for the fascist Front National in France’s recent presidential elections. In Britain the EDL is saying it will join the British Freedom Party to take its message of hate to the ballot box.
We know what it means when fascists get organised. The EDL has a core of Nazis at it centre, many of them associated with the British National Party.
This hardcore spearheads attacks on ordinary people. EDL targets include ethnic minorities, trade unionists, anti-racists and socialists.
EDL boot boys know that most people are repelled by their violence and racism. They also know that united opposition can beat them.
During the Lewisham attack the EDL thugs shouted about their failed demonstration in Brighton the week before, where they were outnumbered and humiliated by anti-racists.
Thousands will join local people in Luton on Saturday to take a stand against the EDL’s rabble of racists and fascists. Together we can drive them off our streets for good.
Andrew Smith, aged 69, was attacked by an EDL gang last Saturday. He said, ‘They smashed up our Socialist Worker stall and one of them headbutted me.
‘I’ve got a possible fractured sinus and a tear to my retina. But I’ll be in Luton on Saturday—and everyone who opposes the fascists should be there too.’
National demo: March against the EDL in Luton, Saturday 5 May, Assemble 11am, Wardown Park, New Bedford Road, Luton LU3 1LP.
