Just days before the government publishes its White Paper on pension reform, Britain’s biggest pensioner organisation – the National Pensioners Convention (NPC) – opened its annual Pensioners’ Parliament.
Over 2,000 older people from across the country met in Blackpool to discuss calls for a universal state pension, immediately set at £114 a week and linked to earnings.
Delegates were also to debate 11 parliamentary-style bills, including calls for:
“We’re going to give the government a right old going over,” a delegate told Socialist Worker. “We’re going to savage Blair and all he stands for.”
