Six hundred GMB union members at the AstraZeneca plant in Macclesfield began a strike ballot over pensions this week. Unite union members are also set to be balloted.
The unions at the drugs giant are demanding that the company does not freeze their pensionable salaries in the defined benefits scheme, which has around 2,500 active members.
The company has said that they can instead move to a defined contribution scheme, with much higher company contributions compared to those given to current active members of it.
The GMB has described this as an “onslaught on our members’ pensions”. The ballot closes on 16 August.
