ON WEDNESDAY of last week 24 copies of Socialist Worker were sold on the picket line at Westbourne Park bus garage in west London. On Monday morning this week 9 papers were sold to striking BT call centre workers in Manchester, 8 in Cardiff, 6 in Glasgow and Sheffield, 5 in Liverpool and 3 in Brighton. 25 papers were sold at the PTA plant at Ford Dagenham with 9 more sold at the engine plant. And 62 were sold on workplace sales across Hackney in east London last week. They included 7 papers sold at Homerton Hospital, 4 at Upper Clapton post office, 3 at Shoreditch fire station, 3 at Paragon Road post office, 2 at Andrews Road council depot and 8 at Homerton School. Thanet’s first industrial sale for over a year resulted in eight papers sold to contract construction workers at Pfizer’s Viagra plant at Sandwich.
In central London 7 papers were sold at the Westminister Jubilee Line Extension site, 6 at Mount Pleasant post office, 5 at Camden Town Hall and 4 at Victoria post office. Elsewhere 27 papers were sold at Riverside House council office in Greenwich, 20 at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, 11 at Royal Liverpool Hospital and 10 at Copperas Hill post office in the same city, 7 at Manchester’s Oldham Road post office and 6 at each of Vickers in Newcastle, Glacier Metals in Glasgow, Islington DLO and Harringey council education office.
On Saturday 110 papers were sold on Holloway Road in north London petitioning over Ken Livingstone’s right to stand, 146 at the Monument in Newcastle, 112 in Glasgow’s Argyle Street, 83 in Leeds, 61 in Ridley Road market in Dalston, east London, and 59 in Mare Streeet, Hackney. In Manchester 166 papers were sold in Market Street and 41 in Cheetham Hill.
Over the last week 4 people have joined the Socialist Workers Party in Manchester; 2 in Dundee, Brighton Technical College, King’s Cross, Highbury and Notting Hill; 1 in Erdington, University of Central England, Leeds, Stratford, Dalston, Nottingham, Fulham, Newcastle West End, Edinburgh Tollcross, Sheffield Gleadless and Glasgow.
