Workers and students protested at University College London (UCL) on Wednesday of last week against plans for budget cuts which could mean the loss of up to 400 jobs.
Workers are waiting to hear exactly where the cuts will fall, but every department is expected to make “savings” of between 2 and 10 percent.
“We are pushing for the college to agree that there will be no compulsory redundancies,” Tamsin Piper, the branch secretary for the Unite union at the university, told Socialist Worker. “No-one knows what the cuts will translate into and there’s a lot of uncertainty.”
UCL has £100 million from donations in the bank.
Sean Wallis, the UCU union branch secretary at UCL, told the rally, “There is no such thing as painless cuts. All jobs are valuable and need to be defended.”
