Protest and pickets
The NUS demonstration on Wednesday of last week against fees was the biggest and most militant in years. Socialist Worker Student Society members succeeded in getting around 1,000 students to parliament and played a leading role in the occupation of Waterloo Bridge. 51 students joined the Socialist Workers Party on the day.
67 copies of Socialist Worker were sold to striking Unison members across Glasgow, 13 to pickets at British Gypsum in East Leake in Nottinghamshire, and 6 to striking postal workers at Knightswood in Glasgow. 61 papers were sold on the CASE demonstration in Leeds.
15 papers were sold at the Engine Plant at Ford Dagenham, 9 campaigning for the PCS general secretary candidate Mark Serwotka at Quarry House in Leeds, 7 at Chivas Regal in Paisley, and 3 at the BBC World Service’s Bush House in central London.
In addition to those who joined the SWP on the NUS demo, 3 joined last week in Leeds on the CASE demonstration; 2 at the Save Ford rally in Dagenham; 1 in Glasgow Maryhill and Cambridge University. In Hackney 2 joined in De Beauvoir, 2 in Dalston and 1 in Clissold, Queensbridge, Springfield and at a public meeting to defend an asylum seeker.
