Around 400 people defied blizzard conditions to march in Barnet, north London, on Saturday of last week.

The “Barnet Spring” march was called to challenge the One Barnet privatisation programme.

Private firm Capita has been given a £750 million contract to take over council services for ten years.

“It’s an attack on our community,” said John Burgess, branch secretary of Barnet Unison, “and we’re marching to say there is an alternative.”

The march was called by the Barnet Alliance for Public Services, which brings together a broad range of local unions and campaigns.

Protester Tirza Waisel said “Barnet is a flagship council for the Tories. If we can stop them here we can stop them everywhere.”
