Some 250 parents, children and campaigners gathered in Salford’s sunny Buile Hill Park last Saturday to defend their local maternity unit.
Generations of Salford babies have been born at the unit of the Salford Royal Hospital (previously Hope hospital)—which is now threatened with closure.
Jemima, a student midwife, said they were fighting “men in suits who care more about money than the lives and well being of the people of Salford”.
Socialist, Green and trade union activists joined the demo.
Sarah Davies, a midwife and Salford University lecturer, added, “If you take birth out of the community, you take the heart out of it.”
