Around 50 people demonstrated against shale gas drilling, also known as fracking, outside an industry summit in Kensington, west London, on Wednesday of last week (see picture).
A report published on the same day revealed that fracking by Cuadrilla Resources had caused 50 earth tremors in the Blackpool area. Protesters occupied a Cuadrilla rig in Merseyside.
Fracking is short for hydraulic fracturing—blasting a mixture of water, sand and chemicals into the ground to release fossil fuels. France and the Netherlands have banned it because of links to drinking water contamination.
