The support for the appeal to trade unionists, and the mood among postal workers in their strikes and among civil service workers at consultation meetings, shows there is a growing clamour for united action among trade unionists.
Mark Serwotka, the general secretary of the PCS union, called last week for a joint day of strike action on Tuesday 6 November, the day of the queen’s speech when parliament is reopened.
While a united strike on such a day would be a fantastic show of strength, the possibility of joint action in the next few weeks seems to be diminishing.
However, there remains the opportunity for a united strike of postal workers, civil service workers and other public sector workers in the autumn, which could force the government and management back.
