Anti-war protesters surged to the gates of Downing Street on Monday evening after the prime minister’s office refused to take delivery of a letter calling for troops to be brought home from Afghanistan.
Two hundred people joined the protest called by the Stop the War Coalition to mark the sad fact that more British soldiers have now died in Afghanistan than in Iraq.
Stop the War convenor Lindsey German said, “The military is talking about a 30 year war in Afghanistan. The government and media pretends that public opinion supports the war while polls show 56 percent want the troops out by the end of this year.
“This Saturday we are calling for a day of action across Britain as part of a nationwide campaign for withdrawal.”
