The fight to reinstate Michael Gavan, chair of Newham Unison local government, was bolstered last week when a rally of 200 people was addressed by a range of speakers including film maker Ken Loach. Ken also introduced a special preview of his new film It’s A Free World.

Speakers included John Grey, London Unison regional treasurer, alongside members of the union’s national executive and victimised Manchester mental health worker Karen Reissmann.

The meeting heard a number of messages of support.

Michael explained that since his suspension the council have sought to push through vicious attacks to working conditions of refuse and street cleansing workers and to drive through plans for privatisation.

The branch has been debating with regional officials the steps needed to win this dispute.

It is insisting on a ballot for serious and sustained strike action as well as using the Labour Link to exert pressure. The union is now organising the strike ballot.
