Record chaos?

NEW LABOUR has awarded the contract to run the National Criminal Records Agency to the private company Capita. Capita will process the records of anyone looking to work with children, which could be up to ten million people a year.

They won the contract despite the crises caused in the Passport Office and asylum department by private companies over the last few years. There been a barrage of complaints against Capita in south London, where it has failed to process people’s housing benefit on time.

Death on the line

TWO WORKERS doing rail maintenance for private contractors Balfour Beatty and Jarvis were killed at work two weeks ago. Jarvis and Balfour Beatty were responsible for rail maintenance on the line where the Hatfield crash occurred last week.

Michael Mungarvan, working as a railway maintenance worker, died after an empty train struck him as he walked along a section of track between Waterloo and Victoria in London.

Michael, a 22 year old student, was working to supplement his student grant. He was employed by the McGinley Recruitment Services agency, which was subcontracted to Balfour Beatty Rail Maintenance. Mark Meadowcroft died in hospital after being struck by a train near the Bradford interchange in West Yorkshire.

Mark, aged 41, worked for Jarvis Fastline, the rail maintenance section of the giant construction firm Jarvis.

POLICE HAVE dropped any corporate manslaughter charges over the deaths of four construction workers on Avonmouth Bridge last year. Three of the men worked for the subcontractor Kvaerner Cleveland Bridge, part of the Kvaerner multinational group.

Andy Rogers, Jeff Williams, Ronnie Hill and Paul Stewart died after their gantry blew off its rail, sending the workers plunging into the River Avon. Workers have long been expressing their concerns about lack of safety.
