Retreat on rail safety
THE STRATEGIC rail Authority is warning that the government could retreat on its promise to install a new safety system.
Deputy prime minister John Prescott claimed “finance isn’t a problem” over installing the safety system after the Ladbroke Grove crash. But the cost for the scheme has risen from an estimated 1 billion to 2 billion or 3 billion.
Leading figures in the rail authority fear New Labour will decide that is too high a price. “I don’t believe the government will ever achieve the recommendation,” said one.
