AROUND 800 workers at Rexam Glass, in Barnsley struck for a day last week over pay. The workers, members of the TGWU and AEEU unions, are demanding a 5 percent rise from the glass and packaging company.
Only when workers balloted for strikes did the company offer 3 percent. This was thrown out in a ballot by 512 to 152 votes. Last week’s strike was solid and everyone agreed it had been a success. “People are sick of being messed about by the management,” said one TGWU member. “We have the power to get more out of them.” Management have made slight improvements in the offer. Union officials have suspended the further one-day strikes for a ballot on the offer.
